About Us
Our Background
The first iteration of the society in 1996 was BABESOC, the Biotechnology and Bioprocessing Engineering Student Society, within the then UNSW Faculty of Life Sciences. After a faculty restructure in 2001, BABSOC was established to cater for a larger cohort of students undertaking study with the UNSW School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS).
Since then, BABSOC has been working to promote and foster a positive community involving BABS students and staff, external scientists, science-based industry and stakeholders involved in scientific discovery and commercialisation.
Our Aims
We aim to provide a platform for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to explore and develop their interests in biology, across both established and emerging areas of the field. We are committed to supporting students throughout their studies by fostering a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment where knowledge can be shared, cultivated, and expanded. Through this, we strive to build a strong, connected community that extends to students across all BABS degrees at UNSW.
Our Events
We organise a wide range of academic, career, and social events, many of which are hosted in collaboration with other societies to offer a diverse program suited to students across all degrees. Our academic initiatives include revision seminars, and skills workshops designed to support student learning. On the professional side, we run resume and interview workshops, industry networking and Q&A sessions connecting students with professionals. Socially, we foster a strong sense of community through BBQs, trivia and games nights, movie nights and pub crawls.
